For me, I disagree. I find the saying very helpful. I'm one, though I've improved much over the years, who can slip to reading WAY too much in to things/situations/people's voice inflections/people's actions/ etc. (Yeah, I have an anxiety disorder, ha!)
But saying that cliche in my mind can help me stop that inane cycle of illogical rumination in my head. :)
Good question, though! I can see how the cliche may be stupid to some people.
Yep, Welby it is good to see you. I am not here as often as I'd like these days, (but still a lot) and I know I must miss you, so I appreciate it when I know you are here.
Sometimes... IT IS JUST EXACTLY WHAT IT IS AND DON'T READ INTO IT... Other times... It's used inappropriately... Often, it's used inappropriately. So. Use it the way it's supposed to be used, pepper it into a rare mentioning, don't use it all the time, 'cause life's not that simple.
May I hear an example of a smart cliché? Isn't that the essence of the word "cliché"; you know, it is out-moded, tired and in addition, we have become inured to the sound of any cliche' and we are no longer enticed by its message?
I'm too clever for even me today, don't even try it.

You have never and will never hear me say it. It's like fingernails on a blackboard.
