I think the term "pipe dream" probably refers to the hallucinations induced by inhaling hash smoke through a pipe or hookah.

Pipes can chanel gases, and some solids such as sand or pulverised ore.

Pipes have greater structural strength than square, rectangular, C or I shaped beams, and so are very useful in architecture. The drawback - they require more skilful welders or fancier prefab joiners.

A pipe can be used as
a handle, mixing tool, modelling tool, lever, wheel, axle, or roller for transfer of weight,
a container for a mould,
to form part of a hinge, pivot or pulley, or armature for a sculpture,
or as part of a sign, telephone or electric carrier system,
or as a flagpole, marker, fence post, mast,
or as a weapon,
or musical instrument.

I've probably missed a lot.

We used pipe as conduit under bridges in which to run telephone cable.

 

  How about for transferring air and other gases?

  The double use of the word “other” is redundant. 

Venting things like dryer lint out of a house.

Tunnels for rodent pets.
Hiding places for fish in aquariums.
