    It's a tricky business except if you ARE by some awful means able to cut a Klingon in half. Then it is quite an easy matter to date the creature by simply counting the rings.

    True. If we were to ever discover a planet supporting silicon-based life forms, then if we wanted to explore and examine their progenitor lines, it couldn't be by carbon 14, so we'd have to go back to the drawing board.
