At first, I thought you meant that “a mother“ was the person who asked you the question.

In a way, yes.
For example: 
“Did anyone ever ask you . . . “
”Yes, a mother asked me, and I said . . . “
In fact, my original answer was going to simply be the word “yes”, because it wasn’t uncommon to be asked that question several times as a youngster, and by several different people.
  After I typed the first word, the rest of my story came flooding back into my mind.
