If I was driving through your city on my way to Timbuktu where could I find a payphone to call information for directions?

Do they still have '411 information'?

You might have a hard time finding a public payphone in my town.

You  could find one at the Parksville medical center and one at the Parksville City hall/tec center.  I think we still use 411 here but there is a fifty cent charge when you use it. Cheers!

That's good,  I might as well fill up the tank too because I got a long ways to go.

Pay phone?  They took the last one of those things out years ago.  Since Timbuktu is an actual "town" near here, it's best just to follow the signs.

Thank-you Thank you. Who hyphenates that? And pay phones have been obsolete for at least 15 years.

Ok but my spell correct said 'thank-you'. Whom am supposed to believe?

I knew pay phones were scarce but not totally eliminated.

They are not obsolete.  Perhaps where you live, but not nationally.  True only about 100,000 remain.  The only thing that makes a pay phone a payphone is the actual device.  It uses a regular landline.  Little country stores and bait shops often still have a payphone.  It's their business phone and might generate a little cash.  I actually used my own advice and found four payphones in my area.
