Ladders.

[On a local radio station’s morning show in a conversation about road hazards, they pointed out that at least once every single workday, somewhere on the highways and streets in or around San Diego County, a ladder falls off the back of a truck. In the area where you live, what is one of the most common road hazards frequently seen on the highways or streets?]

    I've never seen a ladder fall off of a truck or anything like the other picture.   To lose a ladder like that is both criminal and civil negligence.  In my home state, the capital of ridiculously high awarded damages, people who transported anything are to check the safety of the load every time they stop the vehicle.  I don't mean for traffic lights.   Most of them take pictures time-stamped in case of litigation.  But like I said, I've never personally seen it.  What I see that bothers me is long boards or ladders sticking out beyond the bed of a truck.  People don't always comply with the law of hanging something attention grabbing like a piece of red fabric from the point that sticks out the longest distance.  I try not to drive behind any vehicle that carries something that could fly out of the truck.

    I think often about what you said  - the vast majority of people in the area I live, if they have something extending beyond the back of their truck bed, they almost always put some sort of attention-getting sign or flag or whatever. It does help me as another driver on the road.

    Indeed.  Anytime this subject comes up I think about the scene in the movie Twister where a tree or some kind of pole flies thought the windshield of the mean man's truck and kills the not-so-mean driver.  I suppose the meanie got dead too.   Anyway, I try to never drive behind a truck with anything that could fly out or fall off.  Sometimes all I can do is slow down and drop way back.
