No. That's a generation removed. My mother's first cousin is once removed from me. Nothing to do with being alive or dead.

I have two on my mom’s side of the family. One of them is married so I also have a cousin-in-law. My first cousin on my dad’s side of the family died. His daughter is 11 years old. My aunt and uncle are legally her parents because the state terminated the mom’s parental rights, so she could either be considered a first cousin or a first cousin once removed. I just consider her a first cousin. All of my first cousins live in Colorado.

About 40 from a total of 12 aunt and uncle pairs. I never got to know many of my cousins very well because they were all city kids and my family people were out in the rural farm community.
