    What it is.
    What it was.
    What it will be.

What is what? It's not what it is, whatever that even means.

It means the issue is clear and can't be spun any other way.

I didn't say I used the expression, I merely answered your question as to what it meant. :)

I hear many others with similar frustration with the expression and I understand your points about the expression.
However, for me, the expression really helps me at times to remember that " it is what it IS" and it is NOT what I'm making up in my head with my at-times distorted and negative thinking patterns that create negative things that don't exist ("They're mad at me" "What if this or that happens . . . ?" etc.)
The expression can be a gentle reminder for me to sit back and just breathe.

And I don't mean to yell with the upper-case letters - - I'm just wanting to emphasize my intent. :)

By the time I had finished typing my post there, I hadn't even thought about your use of upper-case letters, ha!

It’s a simple contract, sir, nothing more than that. Please stop squinting at the fine print, it’s merely standard legalese. We had our tax firm look it over, I’m sure you’ve heard of them, The StuBee Associates.  I’ll make a tiny tick mark here to show where you’ll be signing it and you just leave everything else to Randolph D Randall Industries. Be a good egg and sign so that I can get to the cafeteria before the last ham and cheese on pumpernickel is gone. (Cough, cough.)
