Already 14 cases of voter fraud this year. Is it worse this year or is it just being reported more? How to fix it?

Dead people voting, people voting in multiple states, illegals voting, voting in person and in mail, people stealing mail in ballots....

---UPDATE---  We are not talking about 14 votes.  But 14 cases of voter fraud each account for more than just one vote.

AZ an illegal proved he could get a voter ID card (he says to settle a bet),
CO there are over a dozen people voted twice,
FL an election worker was charged with marking ballots (don't know how many) and mail in ballots have been stolen and used to vote,
Il over 100 dead people have voted (granted not the 100,000 they have been know for in the past),
IN 837,000 people are registered to vote with out-of-state addresses
IA there were 3 people voted twice
MO a mayor passed out absentee ballots and told the people he would be back later to pick them up
TX is investigating "vote harvesting" at retirement/nursing homes and voter machines supposed to be swapping votes, VA has over 1000 noncitizens registered to vote and about 20% have voted.

It is outlined that people cannot be discriminated against but the expressed right to voted it not.  It has been proposed to add it as an amendentment.

Obama won NC in 2008 by about 14,000 votes.  That sounds like alot.  But it is only about 2 votes/presenct.  2 votes per precinct mattered.  That is enough to worry about. (If the 2/precinct is wrong--I apologize I am quoting Mrs. Obama)

  • Yep.  the right to vote is expressed in the Constitution.  All us straight-shooters agree with you now.  It's mentioned repeatedly.

And what does "disenfranchised" mean? Is that applied to potential "STOOPID EBIL LIBRUHLZ" that have been convinced that their vote doesn't count so they don't bother? (Those that can't think for themselves are so impressionable, aren't they?) That's the same thing that lefties saying "well, it's only 14 cases so it doesn't matter, YOUR vote doesn't matter".

Not sure how to fix it - maybe with stiffer penalties for voter fraud then people might be more scared to do it. I don't think there have been cases of voter fraud  in Canada so maybe we have some measures in place that could be looked at. . Cheers

Anyone who thinks that "voter fraud" isn't a real issue in politics, or that it's a new and inconsequential "non-issue"  needs to read about Tammany Hall. In fact, almost every city in the US has a history of voter fraud. (And let's not forget the 1960 Presidential election . . .)

It is easy to get people to agree to fix this. When I voted democrat I did not care about the voter fraud but this time I am voting for republican so I am bothered by it. Therefore the fix is that more republicans have to vote twice and more dead have to vote for republicans and so on. Then both sides will be bothered and it will be fixed.

Frankly, I think there is far more potential for election fraud via electronic voting machines being tampered with than with the voter fraud you cite.  The machines can easily be tampered with, skewing entire voting locations at a time.

I agree. I mentioned the election machines in TX reportedly switching votes.  We do not have electronic voting here, still using the old paper ballot.  Is the a paper back up for the electronic machines?

That varies by state.  Currently few states have no paper backup.  That will soon change, and probably rather dramatically, as for example the 10-12 year old machines in my state are now outdated and prone to breakdowns.  That will cost some $60 million to replace those machines, IIRC.  But even states with paper ballots or backups don't routinely check, so unless someone forces a recount...

As these machines are replaced, it will likely be with the type that have no paper backup.

This map shows my state using paper ballots, which we do, but they are tabulated by scanners.

I don't like the idea of the machines.  I would feel better if after I voted it printed out a paper ballot that I could look at and see it on the paper and then put it in to the ballot counter like we do now.  Then use those for a recount if needed and to verify the machines are counting correctly.

How often are ballots recounted by hand?  Sure, it's great that they can be, but how often does it actually happen?  If you think voter fraud is so widespread, why aren't ballots being widely checked now?

Every recount I have seen was by hand.

How many recounts can you recall, m2c?  That was my point...if voter fraud is as widespread as you seem to believe, why aren't there recounts happening all over the country?  Are you calling for them regularly?

There are recounts every year. Normally based on a results being really close.

Usually for local races, right?  Now how many recounts for federal elections are held each year, say as a percentage of precincts nationwide?  Or at all?

I have no idea how many precincts recount before they certify their results...I don't believe that is published anywhere.
I know of 2 federal elections that were recounted in since 2000.  But I personally care about all elections not just federal.  I don't want fraud/illegal votes in my state and local elections either. This post was edited by my2cents at November 3, 2016 11:28 AM MDT

I understand that m2c, but my original point stands...election fraud, in whatever form it takes, is a far bigger problem than voter fraud.  JMHO, with which you are free to disagree.  Have a good day, m2c.

Could be, but to me it is still the same problem.  We need to secure our elections in every way possible.

I agree.  But it's like repairing your plumbing and focusing on a leaky faucet when there's a pipe burst elsewhere...I would worry about the pipe before tackling the faucet.

  • Seriously. I'm also more worried about voting fraud on the part of the system and the people in charge of handling the votes. There are much easier ways to rig an election these days than having to go through that kind of mess.

I agree.  That's why I italicized and made a distinction between "election fraud" and "voter fraud".  The tabulations can be skewed on any level and by anyone with access to the machines.  I am less worried about some individual hackers tampering with machines than, as you put it, "the system"...i.e. the powers that be.
