Weird is spelled weird. Was that done on purpose?

It doesn’t follow the normal rule.

That is rather odd. I think one of our grammatationizers could clarify that.

Your last grammar ticket from Stu was the inspiration for this question.  I think that unlike parking tickets, you can actually ignore grammar tickets.  If I’m wrong about that, you didn’t hear it from me.

Oh, he has a mandatory appearance in grammar court.  I think he can just go ahead and skip it.

Influencing others to scoff at the law is par for the course. Please read on:

This Livvie* person is a suspect in numerous crimes, so many that it’s believed she must be the crime boss of one or more gangs of felons. As queen of the miscreants, she most likely presides over untold scores of social misfits and criminal-minded sociopaths, her kindred spirits. A special task force of investigators must be put together to bring her to justice. Grrrrrrr.

    *Most likely an alias.

Er, um, Stu, step over here a moment, I need to speak with you. Partner, you do know that she wrote it that way intentionally, right? Look at the word “their”, you seem to have overlooked that.

So you're saying it was intentional misspelling with malice aforethought? That's an elevated charge with stiffer sentencing guidelines.

Intentional misspelling with malice aforethought in the first degree is punishable by no more than 150 and no fewer than 100 lashes with a wet noodle. Second degree is 125/75 and third degree is 100/50.

    I before e, except after c
Or when sounded as 'a' as in 'neighbor' and 'weigh'
Unless the 'c' is part of a 'sh' sound as in 'glacier'
Or it appears in comparatives and superlatives like 'fancier'
And also except when the vowels are sounded as 'e' as in 'seize'
    Or 'i' as in 'height'
Or also in '-ing' inflections ending in '-e' as in 'cueing'
Or in compound words as in 'albeit'
Or occasionally in technical words with strong etymological links to their parent languages as in 'cuneiform'
Or in other numerous and random exceptions such as 'science', 'forfeit', and 'weird'.

    Thanks to Merriam-Webster

I think I’ll start telling my kids “I before e, except after c, unless it’s weird.”  That won’t help with all those other exceptions, but at least they should get weird right.
