If you had never done it before but found out it is now part of your job with the company; how would you fire somebody?

Supposing the person is to be laid off due to lack of work for them to do
Or for any other reason that you could think of.

I live in an at-will employment state and I have a law degree, therefore I would never give a reason.  My answer assumes there is no employment or collective bargaining contract.

I would walk into the employee's office with two security employees (one male, one female) and say that he/she is being separated from the company today.  The reason for one male and one female security employee is in case the former employee requests to go to the restroom.  I would go over the paperwork and explain the check(s) included in the file.  There would be acknowledgement to sign.   I would tell her to gather her belongings and hand her company ID/badge to me.  The security employees and I would escort the former employee out of the building to her car.  The security guys would remove any type of parking decal or sticker used for admittance into company parking areas.  They then would drive behind the former employee to the edge of company property.

I am very professionally pleasant and direct when I fire someone.
In a laid off situation I am more relaxed.

Listen, I have some good news and some bad news for you: the good news is that you’ll finally have a lot of free time on your hands so that you’ll be able to meet me at your place after I get off work and on the weekends. No more excuses about how tired you are from working long hours and about how much this job stresses you out. Oh, what’s the bad news, you ask? Well, along those same lines . . .

By show of hands, please indicate if you’ll still be employed here tomorrow.

Er, um, not so fast there, Johnson . . .

Would you mind taking a walk with me in the woods out behind the office complex? Yes, I know that hardly anyone ever goes back there, that’s exactly what gives it its charm, it’s so peaceful, restive, secluded. No, no, no, you won’t be on your feet for very long at all, in fact, you’ll find it to be a very laid back atmosphere . . .

I would send them to HR.
That's their job - and why I don't work in HR.

    lol
