Needless to say... it's a form of emphasis according to Cambridge dictionary.

I'm not a Brit. I use 'Randy's Dictionary of Form, Style and Grammar.'

Neither is Kittigate and neither am I, but English dictionaries from England are definitive (I prefer the one from the other major destination for Rhodes scholars, ie the OED). It's their language, you messed it up.

Co-authored by Stu, thank you very much. You obviously don't, or you wouldn't make your usual 5-10 errors/day.

Agreed, it's similar to my pet peeve, "it goes without saying". If it goes without saying, shut the hell up.

Or "To make a long story short..." It never is. This post was edited by Element 99 at December 25, 2021 7:06 PM MST

    I always admit my verbose nature -- "To make a long story longer . . . "

I sometimes say, "To make a short story long."

My sisters should say that. That's what they do.

For the same reason they say, "I hate to tell you, but..." and then tell you anyway. It's related to the tendency to make a statement and follow it with, "just saying," as if that adds something to the message.

It's too stupid and useless a saying to have any kind of correct form or spelling.

It's so obvious that it goes without saying.

Because if you say Needless to say and stop, I promise you someone will inquire as to what you are referring.

As opposed to not saying anything. If something is needless to say, why not just keep silent? This post was edited by Stu Spelling Bee at December 26, 2021 7:04 PM MST
