I have a new theory which is - when Cook was looking for the Northwest passage and mapping the west coast of Vancouver Island he anchored in Nootka sound and planted the tree there. But because of a whaling dispute between the Mowachaht and Muchalaht first nations people the tree was dug up and moved to Victory BC for safe keeping. Unfortunately years later the tree was cut down by the ancestors of Sweeny Todd  and used for firewood  (Sweeny Todd the rock star - not Sweeny Todd the Barber of Seville). There is a bronze statue of cook in Victory and on that statue there is a leaf that looks a lot like a Catalpa tree leaf.  Cheers!
