If you used hotter water and a longer soak time do you think your clothes would be reasonably clean without soap?

And help avoid polluting the water.

    No.  For one thing, not all fabrics can be washed in hot water - some shrink.  There are detergents that are out now that don't pollute the water because they don't use those chemicals to clean your wash.

    No.  It's not the temperature of the water that cleans, it's the soap.  Soap bonds with dirt and such, and the water rinses it away.

    No worries if your detergent has no phosphates.   Most today do not.  I don't even have the hot water line connected to my washer; I used cold for all laundry.
