If you had a great capable singing voice, what kind of uh.. stuff would your preference be to sing?

Do singers usually write their own lyrics?

Some singers write their own songs, some do not.

I would sing a heretofore unknown genre that I would name “grap music”.

Grammar Rap, or Grammatical Rap, or Grammatically Correct Rap.

Right now I am trying to learn light Mongolian throat singing, some Inuit as well. For some reason it fascinates me.

If I had a singing voice I'd sing Nora Jones type of songs, soulful, spiritual.

Singers' voices originate from the diaphragm, which is in the chest cavity. In proper breathing technique (learning that is a big part of vocal training), the throat is opened to allow the free flow of air.

Thanks. And I might be confused, too - - I know another friend of mine introduced me to some sort of interesting, unusual-to-me vocalizations/singing - - can't remember the exact name. Thought it was what BB mentioned.

Throat singing appears to be taught by another person and is done in duet. Since I don't have another person to teach me I just do one part which seems to fall short.

It's no if for me. I have sung in several groups, starting in college. Among my favorites is Franz Biebl's beautiful setting of Ave Maria for men's voices. I can be heard in this 2012 video, standing third row, second from the right in white shoes.

Thanks. This was at a reunion, and I just remembered that I was wearing white shoes that night, so I was able to spot myself among all the other guys in black shoes, lol!

I didn't even know this was on YouTube until now. Good thing I wore the white shoes so I could spot myself 10 years later!

That's nice. I particularly like the quiet parts. Thanks!
A nice way for me to begin settling down for the night.

The piece has an interesting history and a special place in the Cornell Glee Club's repertoire. Franz Biebl was German and composed it in about 1959. The glee club met him in 1970 on tour in Germany. He gave several of his works to our director, Tom Sokol. Professor Sokol brought them home to Cornell and gave it its American debut. It has since become quite popular and widely performed, most famously by a professional group called Chanticleer, as well as many collegiate and other amateur ensembles. I'd first want to turn into Julee Cruise.
Her voice singing Angelo Badalementi music floors me to heaven.  (I like that phrase I just made up.)

Here is my Tops: Julee Cruise singing "Rockin' Back Inside My Heart"

The song is part of director David Lynch's  "Industrial Symphony Number 1: Dream of the Brokenhearted" (music by Angelo Badalamenti)

I hope at least someone watches and listens  :)
    - -the entire slightly-under-an-hour film performance is pure fine art all the way for me  :)

(Yes, she's singing in the trunk of a car at that point)

    "Rockin' Back Inside My Heart"

Tell your heart that I'm the one
    Tell your heart it's me

    I want you
    Rockin' back inside my heart
    I want you
    Rockin' back inside my heart
    Rockin' back inside my heart

    Shadow in my house
The man, he has brown eyes
    She'll never go to Hollywood
    Love moves me

    I want you
    Rockin' back inside my heart
    I want you
    Rockin' back inside my heart
    Rockin' back inside my heart

Tell your heart you make me cry
Tell your heart don't let me die

    I want you
    Rockin' back inside my heart
    I want you
    Rockin' back inside my heart
    Rockin' back inside my heart

    Shadow in my house
The man, he has brown eyes
    She'll never go to Hollywood
    Love moves me

    I want you
    Rockin' back inside my heart
    I want you
    Rockin' back inside my heart
    Rockin' back inside my heart

    She'll never go to Hollywood

Do you remember our picnic lunch?
We both went up to the lake
And then we walked among the pines
The birds sang out a song for us
We had a fire when we came back
    And your smile was beautiful
You touched my cheek and you kissed me
At night we went for a stroll
    The wind blew our hair
    The fire made us warm
    The wind blew the waves
    Out on the lake
We heard the owl in a nearby tree
I thought our love would last forever
