    The moon or Mars. Life on sailing ships must have been miserable. Crappy food, dirty water and filthy. You also don't know who you are going to meet when you hit the shore.

    I can't figure how they survived all that for months and would still have energy to do all the sailor's work at sea then lower a heavy boat into the water and paddle ashore. 

    Those sailors in the days of yore must have been some pretty tough characters.

    And I might appreciate the opportunity to simply say "Hello" to the people who greeted me instead of trying to push them out of my way as I tried to take over their land. 

    I might ask them if they had an extra piece of rhubarb pie, too.
