That what the people we were with said. The next trip was just my daughter and me and we went to the south rim. By then I had become one of those people who can't go look into the Canyon.
Trust me, NO pictures or anecdotes of Antarctica could do it justice! You really must be there to experience the crisp, clean air, the beautiful, clear waters, the breathtaking snow and ice formations, the brilliant and scintillating sunshine and the opaque quietude in person.
Luckily, the Antarctic Tourist Board curtails this. It is a very strict and enforced mandate that absolutely no more than one hundred (100) visitors (including expedition guide staff) can be present on the Antarctic continent at any given time and, the only things allowed on the continent are camera equipment and (I believe) one litre of water, all of which must be taken with you upon your exit from the continent. Also, despite Antarctica's extreme lows, it is illegal to light any kind of fires while on the continent. Thank goodness mankind has the good sense to try and preserve at least one place here on Earth!

In the USA, if you are an Easterner, I would recommend to everyone to see the West. Not the cities....they are miserable. Go to the extreme Northwest corner and see the Pacific up there. Not the sound...the ocean. My sister and I visited up there and had some sort of spiritual experience....both of us. There were very few people up there but there were wild horses on the beach and no loud people or loud music. I took an option on some land up there. I don't think I'm going to do anything with it now. I've traveled many many placed on this Earth but there is really something special about that rural coastal area. If you can visit, do. And don't tell anyone else. ;)

Mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. Personally, I'd steer clear of Gatlinburg. Asheville is a nice city, if you're looking for that. I prefer the countryside near smaller mountain towns and away from the crowds.
Puerto Toro, Chile is farther south than Puerto Williams. I edited my post because the southernmost road I could find on Google Maps goes south from Regional Highway Y-905. I've only traveled to Puerto Williams on the boat from Ushuaia.
I now know how to drive there and that's a long trip on the ferry. I would love to take that trip.
