Sometimes people make statements you don't know if they are being complimentary or critical. How can you tell difference?

The manner in which they are saying it to you in person. Their body language.

When the statements are only in print, it can sometimes be more challenging.

   That’s simple! What she says during the court hearings when she’s filed restraining orders against me, critical. When she’s alone with me late at night all curled up and cuddling close to me while whispering sweetly in my ear, complimentary.

It's a lot easier to tell if it's happening right in front of you. However, it's even better if you ask for clarification. Only then can you decide to thank the person or get him/her ready for a verbal beat down.
