When you were younger did you ever come into a modest inheritance or windfall? How did you use it?

    Yes, quite modest but it is now paying the monthly $1000 upcharge for my mother to have a private room in long-term  care.

    While in my early twenties while I was pregnant, I was in a car wreck and 3 vertebrae were "crushed" in my neck.  I am blessed to even be walking after the injury. The only thing I have from it is arthritis in my neck. My daughter had no effects from the wreck. 

    We bought 22 acres of land and a car with the insurance settlement money.

    No. In fact, I am the only one in my family (other than my daughter) that has any money to pass on to my children. I will be the inheriter.

    I know that sounds confusing, but my daughter and her husband have very large incomes to be able to have small inheritances for their children.

      That “explanation” just makes the whole thing even more confusing. Originally, I responded with exactly what Stu pointed out, that it appears by what you describe, you’re referring to yourself being the benefactor, not the beneficiary/heir (inheriter). I deleted that response because you also alluded to your daughter being in a financial position to be a benefactor to someone, so it would not make you the inheritor if she left assets to you.

    The confusion might have come from my use of the word 'inheriter' which is not a word. My daughter will be a benefactor.

    It doesn't have to be an inheritance.  It could be a signing bonus, an insurance settlement or lottery win for example.

    The only windfall I experienced was a lot of hot air.  Experience is a great teacher.

    My family members tend to be long-lived, and there's a lot of us. My paternal grandfather was relatively wealthy, but given that my step-grandmother is still alive, nobody got doodly.

    Only when i worked my butt off for extra commission. I did win a bit from a poker machine once (i don't play those as a rule, but it was the day after my daughter's birth and a work colleague encouraged me to try my luck as a brand new dad). A $2 bet won me $80.
