Seeing how some counties in the state are at 10% and 11%, 8.5% is on the low side.

    NYC is 8%
Nassau County is 8.875% up to 8.87% depending on the town in which you live. This post was edited by Spunky at July 23, 2022 5:24 PM MDT

    I believe it's 8.25, but what's a quarter point between friends?

Seven percent.  Back home it's 10% and they tax groceries. This post was edited by Thriftymaid at July 23, 2022 5:24 PM MDT

If they tried to tax food in Ohio, there would be rioting in the streets.

In NYC, food that is pre-prepared or prepared let's say at a deli when you order, is taxed, but not most other food.

I will take my 1% higher sales tax over your 13+% income tax in NYC.

    I am still ahead 12+%.....

Yes, there are and you have the short end of both trades, you could not pay me to live in NYC.
But I am glad you enjoy it. Someone has to live there.

GST is a flat 10% on everything. There are additional excises on fuel (primary producers exempt), alcohol and tobacco. This post was edited by Slartibartfast at July 23, 2022 5:24 PM MDT

My state’s sales tax is 4.5%.  My county has none.  The closest city to me has 2% sales tax.

Does NY charge a fee for out of state purchases?  That is a new one....it does not happen here.
