I had an 8 year old, a 3 year old, and a 2 year old. I was a full time housewife on a zip-a-dee-do-da budget.

My children's father was a long haul trucker at the time. He was paid by check sent from the home office. All of his expenses during the month were deducted from his earnings before the check was issued. There were months that the expenses were greater than the amount earned, in other words, a minus amount on the statement. I didn't work back then, child care was practically non-existent. And, believe it or not, I had never heard of welfare or food stamps. I did learn about those things a few years later and as soon as I could leave the kids alone, I did get a job. The husband walked out and I've been on my own ever since.
