How many votes will it take for a Speaker of the House to get elected?

4 5  6 7 8 9 10 11 12-13  votes so far. 

My preference is Jim Jordan but will be happy as long as McCarthy is not Speaker.

    I don't know how many are needed total to get the job. What so special about it? He conducts the sessions and get one vote, like all other  Reps.

    If all members vote, the total is 218 to win Speakership. Less if some members choose to vote present. They need the majority of votes cast. (I do not think this should change the threshold needed) 

    Speaker decides what bills can and when a bill comes to a floor vote. Speaker also has a say in assignments to the different committees in the House. 

    Much more power than just one vote.

    11th vote failed last night.  At what point does McCarthy realize that no matter how much of the store he gives away, they aren't going to make him Speaker?  He is an embarrassment to the GOP and more important, he is an embarrassment to this country.

    12th vote now...he has lost it as well.  

    We are in agreement....he needs to step down. He will never get 218 votes from Reps. Dems could help him but I do not see it happening.

    See above.  Question is about number of times they will vote for Speaker of the House...not number of voice votes required in favor of the nominee for Speaker. 

    We are on the 12th currently.  McCarthy lost this one as well. But has made some flips.  The only chance he has is if Dems help him by voting for McCarthy or voting present. This post was edited by my2cents at January 6, 2023 11:12 AM MST

    I believe 218 votes are required. If you meant how many ballots, that’s a different question.

    It is not ballots...ballots are paper or electronic. 
    It is called a vote for Speaker of the House. Take it up with Congress they named it. 
    There have now been 13 votes for Speaker of the House. 

    They are going to play sneaky tonight. And have people either not show to vote or vote present lowering the number needed to reach majority.   It is a snake move and not a surprise.

    Trump has good policy....but not so good at picking people.  He trusts too many in the swamp

    Well, it took 15 tries, but McCarthy finally got enough votes.  I wonder how much he had to bribe those two final Republicans to vote "present."  It's unfortunate that the Republicans will only want to commence investigations.  So much for working for the people.

    I do not remember everything they got. They are saying Trump called them at the end of the 14th vote. 
    But is Adam Schiff feels like this about it, they did good.

    Some of "We the People" want those investigations.

    When the only work the GOP in the House want to do is investigate Dems, they have no platform to govern.  Actually, they can't even govern themselves, so I have no reason to believe anything resembling working for the people will come from them.

    They do not have enough members to govern.  The only thing they can to is stop Biden's handlers from making things worse. (Which is working for the people) 
    Nothing they pass in the House will pass the Senate. Just as nothing Senate passes will pass the House  now. 
    The only thing they can do is investigate...they can turn things over to the DOJ but it will go no where as DOJ is Dem controlled.
