How much effort does it take to get you interested in soccer?

As a nation, I guess you're more impressed by catching things with your hands. Especially with gloves!

    It'd take less effort to move Mt. Everest halfway around the world using a teaspoon than it would to get me to get interested in soccer.

    And I failed to mention the detail in my other post but I wondered if anyone of them did synchronized swimming in the communal tubs.

    I admit many of the images seem straight from gay male porn. (Pun intended,)

    No matter how much time is invested in getting me to like soccer, it just isn't going to happen. Soccer is up there with golf for me.

    The best games are, in order:

    1. Baseball, hands down 
    2. American football 
    3. Men’s ice hockey - NCAA (college)
    4. Men’s ice hockey - professional

    For me, men’s soccer and women’s soccer rank somewhere below men’s basketball, lacrosse, women’s ice hockey, and women’s basketball, and maybe above track and field.

    I have watched and covered as a sportswriter enough of all of the above to know that nothing will change my rankings.

    I'm not much of a sports watcher in all ways of any sport. 

    But friends of mine have a son who plays soccer and I much enjoyed watching the games. He was about 18 or 19 when I watched.

    The most fascinating sport for me to watch is synchronized swimming. And at the university I attended in my undergrad years,  I was the first male in the university's history to take the synchronized swimming class. it remains the most difficult and challenging physical endeavor I've yet experienced.

    Let's meet in the middle: water polo! You'd be surprised how popular it can be in a landlocked country.

    That sport is interesting to me, too. Yes.

    (Standing at the side of the pool. the teacher for the synchronized swimming class could dive head first into the pool and she could keep her legs in the air and then travel across the pool upside down, keeping her legs above the water as she traveled.)

    Right now, MLS is in the playoffs (the semifinals are next) which I haven’t been following because Minnesota United’s season ended.  They failed to qualify, but if they were in the playoffs, I’d still be interested.  So, qualifying for the playoffs would’ve been the extra effort required to keep me paying attention.  

    Right now the Vikings, the Timberwolves and the Wild are all in their regular seasons so that’s what’s been getting my attention in the sports world.

    This was a thought-provoking question so it inspired me to do a social experiment.  I sent people in my social circle a short message basically asking them to name their professional sports teams.

    My results aren’t in any way scientific but I think they show soccer isn’t as unpopular here as you might think.

    Anyway, eight people from Colorado answered me and nine people from my area (South Dakota and Minnesota) answered me.

    Colorado:
    All eight people named their NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL teams.

    Seven out of eight named their MLS team.

    Zero out of eight named their major league lacrosse or rugby teams.

    Minnesota:
    Nine out of nine named their NFL, NBA and MLB teams.

    Seven out of nine correctly named their NHL team and two named the wrong city’s NHL team.  That should super-embarrassing for anybody from Minnesota.

    Three out of nine named their MLS team.

    One out of nine could name their WNBA team.

    Zero out of nine could name their major league frisbee team.

    Fascinating findings. So, for MLS, 7/8 in Colorado, but 3/9 in Minnesota. Seems the Colorado Rapids are an older team; does that explain the difference?

    I'd like to know how you made fun of the two who got the wrong city's NHL team.

    I sent this message out last night and pretty much everyone who was going to answer already answered me this morning.  I actually thought I had a pretty good response.

    I don’t have any theories as to why the people from Colorado I asked knew the Rapids were their MLS team but fewer people from Minnesota that I asked knew the United were their MLS team.

    I haven’t notified those two that the Red Wings aren’t our NHL team.  I’m still lmao at that one.  There is a city in Minnesota named Red Wing, or maybe they just thought that Detroit was in northwestern Minnesota, about a 45 minute drive from Fargo.

    I’m conducting a social experiment!  This should only take a few minutes.  If you’re in SD or MN, please tell me the names of as many of the major league sports teams in Minnesota you can. (MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA, WNBA, MLS, AUDL, PUL)  If you don’t know one, just skip it and don’t look it up.
    If you’re in CO, please tell me the names of as many of the major league sports teams in Colorado as you can. (MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS, NLL, SRA). If you don’t know one, just skip it and don’t look it up.
