We use an artificial tree. I do not want to mess with having to water a real one all the time. And they are a fire hazard. I leave my lights on 24-7. We also have a Chanukkah menorah as well.

There's a spruce in the yard of the neighbour-who-doesn't-live-here. Instead of bringing a tree inside - which I do think is nice - I just consider that our Christmas tree. The snow covered it a few hours ago.
Okay here I go (You do realize you asked for my thoughts - - yikes) :
Growing up, we usually had a real tree and then, I forget how, my parents somehow donated/got a hold someone who took it in a nature/natural/planet healthy way
As an adult, I've had an artificial one but, many years ago, donated it to a ballet company as part of their yearly lobby decorations for their Nutcracker ballet production (in which I dance)
And now, no tree of any kind. In my upstairs window, here is my lone holiday decoration which I leave up year-round. And it's life size (though I wish the man came with it, ha!).
I preferred real for the thrill of having different every year. These are mostly grown on tree farms and they plant more all the time. And many are used for fish after being taken out. Who knows what sources were used to make the artificial tree?
Yes, I liked what I read about them being just another crop that is harvested and replanted. Nice to support a small business/farm, too. Very good point about from what and how artificial trees are made, too.
A real Christmas tree makes the house smell so good, I like them a lot...however; Expensive artificial Christmas trees are also very nice and beautiful. The cheaper artificial ones are usually awful which is why I almost always had a real one.
