Has the US economy really gotten this bad?

While defending Trump’s tariffs JD Vance said - the US now has to borrow money from Chinese peasants.

"We borrow money from Chinese peasants to buy the things those Chinese peasants manufacture".

It isn't very diplomatic and no way to negotiate a trade war . Cheers!

The US has been borrowing money from China since the Second World War. The deficit is almost entirely underwritten by the Chinese, and if they decide to stop buying US paper, you are going to see hyperinflation that will make Weimar Germany look like a Sunday School picnic.

Japan owns more of the US debt than China does.

There is nothing diplomatic or professional about almost anyone in the Trump administration.  As you know, money doesn't buy class.

US has always borrowed money from the China.  It has always been the Chinese people who were/are purchasing the US bonds etc that fund our debt.  And yes some of those people are peasants.

You think Chinese peasants can afford to buy US bonds?  Must be nice living in your fantasy world.

That is what has been reported for decades. They and Japanese buy US bonds for retirement planning.

It would appear you don't understand the definition of "peasant."

    EDITED TO ADD:

    peasant

    noun
    1. a member of a class of persons, as in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, who are small farmers or farm laborers of low social rank.
    2. a coarse, unsophisticated, boorish, uneducated person of little financial means.

With little financial means, how do Chinese peasants buy US Bonds for the non-existent retirement?

Read Vance's statement.  He is not talking about the rice field workers.

He is talking about the people working in manufacturing.
