Do you want a little rat feces or e. coli with those tariffs?

The FDA is making plans to end its routine food safety inspections (probably because of Trump’s cut backs).

I think that will be very unhealthy for Americans.

And it might affect Americas food exports – other countries aren't going to buy food that could be contaminated. Could even effect tourism – tourists don’t want to get sick from eating at American restaurants.

Cheers!

The USDA reasnatly terminated two longstanding food safety advisory committees.
That can't be good for the food chain. Cheers!

Well, let's look on the bright side.  Many times, beef is the food that is found to have e. coli.  Maybe one of those contaminated burgers will find it's way into the belly of the beast.

We don't import food from the US anyway. Biosecurity.

Giving the lie to Trump's reasons for imposing a "reciprocal tariff". Gotcha.
We absolutely don't import raw beef or lamb, you have CJD ("scrapie") and BSE ("mad cow disease") and we don't want them. Biosecurity. Hands off our Pharmaceutical Benedits Scheme too - I know Republican CINOs (Christians In Name Only) prefer the poor to die rather than have access to affordable medicines, but that carries no weight here. Hands off or we'll make cheap knock-offs with the same ingredients. The hell with your patents, China doesn't respect them either. This post was edited by Slartibartfast at April 23, 2025 3:48 PM MDT

So you do import food from the US. Nice to see you admit the statement above as untrue.
The beef exports are not the only reasons for the tariff on AU.  AU implements VAT tax on products.  USA does not so the tariff takes that tax into account. This post was edited by my2cents at April 20, 2025 5:37 AM MDT

The Goods and Services Tax (VAT is British) applies to all products and services, regardless of whether they're imported or local. Exactly like your Sales Taxes in America. We don't do sales tax and all prices in Australia are posted inclusive of GST, while most in the US hit you with a whammy at the cashier where the sales tax is an added extra. So you absolutely do implement the same sort of tax and a tariff is totally different.

So you all just hide the true tax amount from the consumer.   (We do that with fuel)

USA does not have that tax so the tariff was applied to address the VAT. This post was edited by my2cents at April 21, 2025 6:02 AM MDT

No we don't hide them. You do, with sales taxes which aren't disclosed until you go to pay. And often said sales taxes are higher than our GST (again, VAT is BRITISH, IT'S ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD). We know it's there and exactly how much it is. Tariff plus sales tax is a buttload more than a measly 10%.
Also GST applies to locally produced goods and services, so it's hardly a tax on America. I haven't heard the penguins complaining though. This post was edited by Slartibartfast at April 22, 2025 4:45 AM MDT

Not disclosed??? Everyone knows they are going to pay a sales tax and they can see the exact amount of the tax.
If you post the price with the tax included people do not realize how much of the cost is taxes.  So they do not complain about the tax, they only complain about the price paid.
Whatever you want to name it....it is a hidden tax. It is not in your face so you know exactly what the government took from you. This post was edited by my2cents at April 22, 2025 5:54 AM MDT

It's a flat 10%. We're better educated than most Americans, we can count to ten.

Then it is higher than most places sales tax.
It is a 10% every time something  is sold.
So the company makes the portland. They buy materials to bag it (10%), they sell is Home Depot (10%), then I buy cement at Home Depot yet another is 10% added to it. My wholesale customer buys and gets another 10% added to it.  Then we each by paint/stain and have 10% added to it.  Then it finally get to the end customer and gets yet another 10% added to it.

In the USA, the only one who would be charged a tax is the end retail customer and that rate is normally let than 10%..

So no, your Goods and Services tax (VAT) is not a measly 10% by the way.  That is hiding the actual tax from the end customer.  And yes I can do that math.

So the tariff is just another step in the process of getting to the end customer. This post was edited by my2cents at April 23, 2025 2:52 PM MDT
