When Is A $550B Investment Not A $550B Investment?

When it is BS - dished out by Donald J Trump.

According to Trump and his administration, in return for a reduction in tariffs, Japan would invest $550 billion in certain U.S. sectors and give the United States 90 percent of the profits.

Trump said - “I just signed the largest trade deal in history, I think maybe the largest deal in history, with Japan,”

But Japanese officials don’t agree. Cheers!

Why am I not surprised that what Trump says and what Japan says are two different things?  From what I read recently, the deal with the UK is not set in stone either. This post was edited by Spunky at July 28, 2025 1:34 PM MDT

I imagine that you are not supersized for the same reason I’m not surprised – a month or so ago Trump claimed he had a big deal with Japan (or China) but it turned out he didn’t. But this one is ridiculous and I can’t see why anybody would believe it. Why would Japan agree to invest $550 billion dollars into the US economy – then give up 90% of their profit – plus get hit with a 15 to 25% tariff on their exports to the US.

    Cheers!

I think they'd have to be pretty desperate to make an agreemet like that.

We will see what gets put in writing and signed.
If they don't sign then the 25% tariffs will kick in.
