Why do religious people feel they have the right to trespass into a private community to push their religion?

We get people walking into our community right past the signs that clearly state "PRIVATE PROPERTY MEMBERS ONLY"

What gives them the right to interrupt my morning then tell me they have a legal right to trespass and push their religion?

Because it is their Christian duty.  God is on their side.

Well there is another private community next to ours. They keep a gate at the front. They don't even try to get into Lake Quivira.

Sue all they want. They do not have free speech in my house or on my property.

I guess we will have to wall off our community just like the others have to keep trespassers out.

Perhaps they missed the sign? If it was me, I would likely look at that as similar to 'no trespassing' and pass it by. Perhaps adding a sign that also says 'no trespassing' will help?

Can you post a picture of the sign?

EDIT: I know that they do not have the right to trespass on peoples individual private property when they post "No Trespassing" signs.

Or perhaps post a "No Trespassing" sign on your property and call the police if they do.

I guess you are paraphrasing as I haven't ever heard anyone say that they "have a legal right to trespass and push their religion".

  • No one has a right to trespass.  If someone does that ... call the police and report them.  But you might also consider not answering your door unless you're expecting someone too.

You would think that a "Private Property - Members Only" sign should be enough.

    Thanks for posting the photo.

It even says "NO TRESPASSING". If the neighborhood has the legal right to post that, it should be enough, I would think. Not sure if an H.O.A., not sure if they would have the right to post that if everyone's taxes paid for the roads and such? Where I live they had an HOA before I ever moved here. Pretty sure if the president of the HOA posted such a sign that it would not be legal as taxpayers did pay for the public streets here.

We have an HOA and own the streets( along with all maintenance), pool, lake and trails.

The only thing the city provides is water.

We hire off-duty Shawnee police officers for security so they can make arrest.

    They have no right whatsoever.

Most of them are fond of the 2nd amendment. Use it on them and see if they like it.

I don't know that religious people feel that way. Proselytizers may feel that their mission supercedes man-made laws, but even those people must be rare. What seems more likely is that they did not see the warning sign, or did not understand its importance to you personally (which is no excuse of course, but may help in explaining why they chose to trespass).

Their right to interrupt you is contained within the constitution, I suppose, because they are in pursuit of happiness. Bringing their message to people requires that they make contact with people who may not wish to hear it. I've been annoyed and interrupted by proselytizers many times in the past, but in the scheme of things it was very minor to me. I've even invited them in to talk and had a pleasant chat with them, on occasion.

I guess next time I will exercise my right (since we are private) to answer the door naked.

    Then show them the sign.

If that's how you'd normally answer the door, then you should do it.

They think their religion gives them the right to do it. They think they are on a mission from God.

Because they think that they answer to a "higher" authority.

Supreme Court says so.  I believe they used the free exercise clause.

I guess we will have to put up a gate like the others have done.

They don't have that right if there's a clearly visible sign, the question is, would you feel guilty calling the police on them, lol.

Kinda hypocritical for a Christian to post something like that, isn't it? You think that the first century Christians just sat in the temple and waited for others to come to them like the Churches today do?

(Matthew 4:19) And he said to them: “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

(Matthew 10:12-14) When you enter the house, greet the household. 13 If the house is deserving, let the peace you wish it come upon it; but if it is not deserving, let the peace from you return upon you. 14 Wherever anyone does not receive you or listen to your words, on going out of that house or that city, shake the dust off your feet.
(Luke 10:1-5) After these things the Lord designated 70 others and sent them out by twos ahead of him into every city and place where he himself was to go. 2 Then he said to them: “Yes, the harvest is great, but the workers are few. Therefore, beg the Master of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest. 3 Go! Look! I am sending you out as lambs in among wolves. 4 Do not carry a money bag or a food pouch or sandals, and do not greet anyone along the road. 5 Wherever you enter into a house, say first: ‘May this house have peace.’
(Matthew 28:19, 20) Go, therefore, and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you. And look! I am with you all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.”
(Revelation 3:20) Look! I am standing at the door and knocking. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into his house and take the evening meal with him and he with me.
