    I don't think this. I KNOW this.

There is COPIOUS evidence that Americans are extremely underinformed about the world.

Most people in the USA don't even know the USA is a country; much less, what other countries are thinking, saying or doing.

  • Sure, I would venture to say that is true. Luckily I have always had a knack for geography and a fascination with other countries and cultures.

I've put a bit of thought into this question in the past and I think Americans are as ignorant about other countries and other countries are ignorant about America.

I've done a bit of world traveling and from their perspective, all Americans either wear cowboy hats and roam the desert on horses, or all Americans live in a big city like LA or NYC. They also tend to think that all Americans are gun toting warmongers.

Learning about the world around us and our neighbors is a never ending process for everyone, not just Americans.

Most Americans can't even point to their own state on a map.

  • Yes...Canadians do not live in Igloos.  Ok maybe way, way, way up North there might be small handful.

  • I think most citizens of most countries are ignorant about most other countries.  It's not obligatory or very desirable, but it is natural in it's own way.

The USA is so big and isolated, and a young country that the culture is different than a smaller country that has to be aware of all other countries because of the small size. You can see this when Americans travel to other countries (they are not aware of the clothes in the country and they don't blend in as much as other people from other countries.) With age comes wisdom, hopefully and an awareness of other cultures. Europeans and other countries are quite educated about other countries and cultures.  (Americans can usually be spotted easily in other countries due to talking louder than the other tourists and the natives, and wearing clothes that are not like the rest of that country) Fashion is ahead one or more years in Europe, and they are very fashion conscious.

Most are ignorant of their own country.

If it's not on a reality TV show or a sports network they know nothing about it.
