What brand of cigarettes did you smoke in highschool?

Oh my...anything we could get a hold of.  I think I recall smoking Marlboros until we all went on that silly menthol kick.  Then it was Newports.

I no longer smoke, so I can cringe guilt free over those times.

  • Lucky Strikes and Winstons.  Then Camel Wides for a few years.  Back to Lucky and Winston. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at January 14, 2017 9:48 PM MST

This is why I laugh.  We bought whatever we could find in a cigarette machine.  Sometimes the choices weren't the best, but any cig would do.

Never had to go to a machine.  Back then, Elmer,  at the Pool Hall would sell them to us teens.

Virginia Slims at first, then settled on Marlboro Lights. Quit a long time ago, thankfully.

Of course, they didn't sell my first preference of things to be smoked in stores. : )

  • I can't remember the name but they had a picture of a clipper ship on the packet. Fortunately I stopped smoking when I left school.

Tried to become a smoker in high school.  Preferred menthol (Montclair).  Tried for six or seven months and decided it wasn't for me.  Smelled bad, upset my stomach. tasted like I was licking an ashtray, and cost too much.  I think they were about $.79 a pack back then

Viceroy because that's what I could lift from my mom's pack.  After that, it was Parliament and then Newport Menthol 100s.  Then I quit - 31 years ago.  When I last bought a pack, they were $1.25.  Now, they're about $10 a pack.  I don't know how anyone can afford to smoke these days.

  • It's tough.  I'll give you that.
One thing I noticed because of price is older generations would  kinda just smoke their  cigs carefree and would often just let them burn while taking occasional draws.  Even set them down in the ashtray.   At $10 a pack you don't do that anymore.   You make sure you get it all and save those shorts. That's true.  Back in the day, you could smoke anywhere.  I used to smoke in the office, leave it burning in the ashtray while I went to take dictation and when I came back, the cig had burned down and I had to light another.  That was why I usually bought twice as many cigarettes.  When I stopped smoking, I was going through 2 packs a day - that would be $140+ a week these days.  Crazy.  When I started smoking, a pack was 25 cents!

  • When they were $.25  wasn't there something about Lucky Strikes being $.23 and machines gave you the two pennies back?
I've heard this before I think.
