  • I think the Sacramento Zoo is still there but I can't even remember the last time I was there. Probably back when my kids were little.

  • We mostly did it with the kids, too, though we have visited a country zoo twice while we've been on holidays. There's a tiger story in that, but I might tell it further down.

  • I grew up going to the Sacramento Zoo :) Of course when we wanted to see something a bit more impressive we'd go to the San Francisco Zoo, but I'll always love the Sacramento one.

The last time I visited a zoo was in the 70's when I didn't know any better. I'd never go to one now.

  • Fair 'nuff.

A lot of zoos are combining in breeding programmes to try to keep endangered species from becoming extinct. And there are some who use vast open spaces rather than the cages of suburban zoos so that the animals can roam freely -- within limits, of course.

  • I've been to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and that's where to really see the animals.

  • Oh, yeah. Would have been a great experience.

Now I'd better shut down for a couple of hours and venture out into the world with Mrs Didge.  Back later.

  • I have a large city zoo within 50 miles and a smaller county zoo about 25 miles away. I went to both when my kids were young but I'm not a big fan of keeping wild animals captive just for human enjoyment.

  • We had a local zoo.. it was pretty neat and in the scheme of things the animals were very well taken care of.. and it was as a result of that that my favourite veterinary practice sprung up and now specialises in exotic animals.. I wouldn't be without them.

But at the same time... I agree with others here.. yes I know many have breeding and conservation programmes but at the same time... so many of the animals there look unhappy and unnatural.... so they make me feel sad :( Some are truly awful.. one is also a theme park now and the animals are just there for the sake of it :(

If I had to choose a fav it's another local one.. it has mainly birds . birdworld.. yes I know not animals but the birds seem to have very large very well landscaped aviaries so not too bad and in other areas there are massive enclosures and some free ranging animals and birds.

  • "Yes" ... about twenty-five miles away.
"No, I've never been there" ...
but when I was younger, and lived in the San Diego area,
I used to visit that Zoo quite often.

Yes...ours was ranked by US News and World Report as the best in the nation. Toledo, Ohio. It is about 5 miles away. I haven't been there in years, but when my children were young we went there often.

I went to the National Zoo on several occasions when the kids were in school on school trips. Yes the National Zoo is a Zoo. Very little crowd control. Very few employees you can turn to for assistance. Perhaps they have changed but we were constantly disappointed.

I haven't been to a zoo since I was little when my dad took me to the San Diego Zoo, most animals in a zoo are not endangered species, and the ones that are endangered can never be we released into the wild, polar bears, Bengal tigers, gorillas, chimpanzees the list goes on.

Yes we have a traditional zoo about a hour away. We went to it just a couple weeks ago. We have a drive through zoo a hour and half away, it has been a few years since we were there.
We have a smaller zoo in town, we went in Aug.
We have a indoor zoo with seaturtles and sharks that we can feed. Also went in Aug.

  • Yes, the Sacramento Zoo and the San Francisco Zoo are both not far. I loved going to zoos as a kid; haven't been much past then, but in college my friends and I visited the SF Zoo on an empty rainy day. It was nice :)

  • The Colombus Zoo is about 3 hours from me. Last time I went was just this past mothers day....it was fun...until I got pulled over for speeding on the way home!
