"The police ruled the death an accident." Isn't that an inaccurate statement?

A police department arrests, files charges, investigates, turns its evidence over to the district attorney's office or prosecutor's office, etc, but I thought that only a medical examiner or coroner issues a decision on cause of death and or type of death.

Only when called in and foul play is suspected. Methink when the death is obviously accidental they save time and money until reason to question it.

Thank you, I understand your point that the police may render an opinion, but what I'm asking is whether or not someone on the police force can officially sign the death certificate?
