If they call, they usually have a foreign accent...Like Indian or Fillipino. Just tell them you are an IRS agent investigating them.

  • Yes, last year.  It was left on my answering machine.  At first it caught me off guard and I was concerned.  Then it quickly occurred to me the IRS would not call and leave a threatening message on an answering machine.  I mention this to someone at work and it was suggested to report it to the police to be investigated as fraud.

It's funny, but I admit that for the first minute of so he was very convincing...

Yes.  I've received two different messages left on my answering machine over the course of a couple of weeks last year.  He told me if I didn't call them back they would show up at my door and arrest me.  I'm still sitting here dressed in my best ensemble, waiting.  So, you're saying I got all dressed up for nothing?

  • That's funny, )))
I was laughing at the end...his last words were something like, "An officer will be at your door shortly"
He never broke character, it was so funny.

  • Unless I recognize the number, I never answer. Although I see a fair amount of calls from other states, no one ever leaves a message.

Yes I have received several. Usually they do have a middle eastern accent. In addition several words they use are not common in the US like "sending bailiffs to take you to the magistrate". I have reported them to the treasury and the FBI. FYI The IRS will always use the USPS first.

  • I haven't received a call from the IRS but I have received calls from my "bank." They needed my credit card and debit card numbers to straighten out a "problem." The first time I told them I like to lather up with Vasoline, lay on the kitchen floor, and pretend I'm a slug. The second time I told them, "Thank you for calling the Peidmont Triad sperm bank, if you'll yank it we'll bank it!" The third time I told them I had bad constipation and grunted strenuously over the phone while dropping marbles in a bucket of water for sound effects.

Banks also have anti-phishing email reporting addresses. God knows whether they do any good. .
