TNT is tri-nitro toluene and dynamite is glycerol tri-nitrate.

Oh, of course! How silly of me. I read up on Mr. Nobel's stuff, but that was 40 years ago. It may be interesting to know that more Wilsons have won the Nobel prize than any other name.

  • Is that all? In Oz we even think Gelignite is the same as those.

My personal favourite is Prep Kit C. It's the purgative you take the night before having a colonoscopy. Explosive? Holy Dooley, it's explosive! It might not be TNT but it's definitely an IED.

  • Same reason most people don't know that dynamite isn't all the same or that not all smokeless powder isn't just Cordite.
    It all goes boom.

Not heard of Semtex for a while. Has it been superseded?

  • Still used in demolitions.  Now has chemical tracers and the manufacturer has been forced to track it better so it isn't as popular with terrorist anymore.
Semtex is like dynamite in that it isn't an explosive but a preparation of explosives.  Different mixtures and variations containing PETN and RDX have been and are labelled as Semtex.

It seems that most people never learn what they are saying. I was chatting with a fellow once and he suddenly said "You're a libertarian!" I had never heard the word, so I asked him what it meant. He couldn't explain, but whatever it meant, I was one!

Well, as long as it is said by someone who dont know what it is, there is no need to take it to heart ;-))

Probably in the same way XEROX became a verb meaning "to COPY."
