Why do people quote "the Lion will lay with the lamb", when that is not in the Bible?

As if it is a scripture.

It's a nice quote? But if you mean people are wrongly attributing it to the bible, well that just shows how silly some people are.

They quote it believing it is in the Bible.

People aren't allowed quoting any other than the bible? Hmm.

My bad. Actually thought it was common enough quote that it didn't need clarification.
I actually thought it was in there until a customer after seeing our statue of a lion laying with a lamb, said "You know that's not in the Bible?" We We're puzzled and took it as a challenge to find it.  And it is not there. We laugh now every time we hear some one reference it. Especially pastors.

Well, references can be made out of lots of reasons. In my mind a pastor as anyone else can make use of other references than the bible, as long as they don't think they are citing the bible as they do. I'm not a religious person myself and therefor might not have met the quote much. Bottom line, it's all about the use of a quote (the context).

Why not edit your post by placing a clarification in the description field?

    Just a suggestion.

  • For the same reason some people think there will be the Rapture and literally believe people will float up into the sky and hover around earth.

People like to make crap up, but it's pretty easy to understand why...

God is not a lie, God is real, God is truth....deal with it.
But you are correct there is no rapture...it is not in the Bible either.

One need only to read the Bible and see all the prophecies that have come to pass.
I have personal experience with His answering of prayers and protection. Personally seen people healed by faith.

  • Meh... A bunch of drunken monks wrote a book.

As a realist and an atheist, the burden of undeniable proof with firm evidence lies on believers

I'm tired of religious folks ramming their superstitions down our throats and holding society back from progressing

Drunk, stoned or sober they wrote prophecy that came to pass centuries later. Also most of the Bible was written long before Monks.

Lots of things that aren't in The Bible are quoted. Why have you selected this particular one to ask about?
[By the way, I am completely unaware of this quote.]

True there are many things quoted that people believe to be a scripture but actually is not.
I actually thought it was a commonly used one.

We use something similar, but different though... and it's taken from a fable, one could argue the bible as being such. Hmm.

People tend to be too bone idle to check for themselves.

    Same with dictionary bashing.

  • Hi My2¢,

The reference is actually Isaiah 11:6, "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them."

So the message is in the Bible, even though the quote is not precise! My guess is that the powerful imagery took that form because it is so alliterative... This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at March 24, 2017 11:08 AM MDT
