Overindulgence of beans, fruit, granola, nuts, sugar based products, plant based fats/oils, quinoa & other whole grains. Avoiding animal products doesn't cure an eating disorder.

I only know one vegetarian.. and yes overweight..I know several vegans they very slim... I am not sure my survey sample is big enough for me to make any conclusions yet tho.
Could be many reasons as other responses have reflected..! Obesity comes not only from what you eat but how you live....! A sedentary lifestyle is always the culprit. I eat chicken only on Sundays rest of the week I eat vegetarian. Vegetarian food which is home made only. I am very conscious about how much salt and oil goes into cooking. Vegetarian or non-vegetarian can be fat or thin;))
