Did you know house republicans voted to allow your ISP to sell your Internet activity to anyone willing to pay for it?

Republican lawmakers in the US Senate approved a measure on Thursday designed to kill federal broadband privacy protections and allow internet service providers like AT&T and Verizon to sell your sensitive private information to the highest bidder.     50-48

    I fail to see the connection. That phrase, which I have used, is made in regard to warrants or legal investigations. It has nothing to do with corporations profiting from selling private information.

  • It's what people always say when public surveillance of any kind is criticised. Government, NSA, Google, corporations. So much of the sentiment is that " Oh well if you aren't doing anything wrong then why care?" 


    In regard to a legal warrant that's a completely different application and context.

  • This isn't about warrants or legal investigations searches...It literally allows your ISP to gather, analyze, and compile every bit of your internet activity and sell it to anyone including your neighbor, relative, boss, etc.  And yes...it can be used by corporations  as a tool for marketing or for any other reason. Your privacy has just been put on the market

    Yes, that is well known. That is why all the internet is switching to https instead of http and browsers are implementing vpn by default.

    As for that statement "If you aren't doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about", people of Japanese ancestry were not doing anything wrong in 1930 and 1940 when they answered the census questions, but that is where the government got their addresses to lock them up for no particular reason.

  • HTTPS doesn't really protect from this and a VPN is only a safe guard if the VPN provider doesn't sell the data.  That's why free and cheap VPNs are garbage. At least a lot of them are.

    And brown has been my favorite color my entire life, back to whenever we choose our favorite colors. (I think my kindergarten teacher was worried about me - - always choosing the brown crayola.

    It was not passed by the House YET. It was passed by the Senate (S.J. 34).  I have contacted my Rep. and told him not to vote for this bill. It is H.R. 230. It was introduced yesterday 3/27/17.

    Everyone should contact their Rep NOW.
