I'm a firm believer in the importance of local elections.
In fact, I think once you get above the county level, elections are controlled by political parties rather than citizens.

Possibly, maybe Walt but on the other hand the local councils and regions are controlled and to a large extent mercy to the ruling party anyway...

At least here in the US, a lot of "push back" against federal government comes from local jurisdictions.
And as long as they are willing to not take any "optional" money from the federal/state governments ... local governments CAN be pretty independent.

I could be wrong but suspect it's not so easy to be independent here in that way

    LOL

Since part of the independence here relies on NOT taking federal monies ... and everybody seems to love "free" money ... it's not that easy here, either.  (btw - that's why I laugh whenever I hear cities decrying that Trump is threatening to withhold funds from "sanctuary cities".  You want the money, you gotta play their games.)

Too few people know the TANSTAAFL saying.  (There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch)

    LOL

Only if I know one of the candidates personally. Each State has its own rules on locals, one of which in South Australia is that party affiliations, if any, are not permitted to be advertised.
At State and Federal level, voting is compulsory and I'd vote even if it wasn't. Local councils don't actually change anything, at least ours doesn't.

I usually pull up my local ballot and see what is on it. Last time it was a bunch of people I did not know...so did not bother. Most of the time there are different issues such as tax levies or other regulations....I do vote if those are on the ballot.
