Smart-A**, Smart-Aleck repartee is the MO of a few. Most folks prefer to engage in worthwhile conversation. Are YOU among the FEW or MOST?

The few prefer drive-by shootings or hit-and-run and then speed away completely uninterested in polite conversation. What do they get out of it? Are they showing off or playing to a specific audience? I have never understand the proclivity of those who choose that path. Do you? Care to share?

  • Depends on the situation and person.  Generally I prefer engaged, reasoned conversation.  However there is a supervisor at work with whom I enjoy back and forth witless repartee.

I don't expect everyone bend to my will when I post something. I suppose that if I did, I'd have grounds for being in a twit when it doesn't happen. It's an unrealistic expectation for anyone to have, in my opinion.

Smart-"glute" and smart-aleck responses are frequently a sign of intelligence.  When the smart-aleck senses an equivalent intelligence, the ensuing conversation is quite likely to be judged later as worthwhile.

Really? How odd that is if true. I expect you have some reputable studies to which you can point that I can read that would substantiate that so that I will become knowledgeable? I think smart-a** and smart-aleck is rude and insulting. It cuts off the possibility of serious, thoughtful and worthwhile conversation. Being funny haha is fine when appropriate. BUT the person with whon you are speaking should be in on it and NOT the target of it. In my opinion of course which matters not to anyone but moi. Merci for your reply tj. It's curious though. I have engaged with many folks at different times in my life who were certified Geniuses and I cannot remember one of them who was a smarta** or smartaleck. I must have led a very sheltered life. Thank you for your reply and Happy Monday!

Most folks may prefer more examples of worthwhile conversation in which to engage. This post was edited by O-uknow at May 15, 2017 6:52 AM MDT

My point is clear. Folks want topics for conversation not rants for commiseration.

I enjoy witty remarks and sometimes they require no follow-up. I also like conversations where there is a respectful exchange of ideas that provoke thought. If a person gives me an opinion and cannot listen to mine unless it agrees with theirs, I find that a waste of time.

Depends on the situation. I'm an insufferable smarta$$ and I like to find a giggle in almost everything, but I'll stop to engage in serious conversation from time to time.

Well sweetie honestly I cannot remember a single time you ever came off as smart-a** or smart-alecky in all the years we've been chatting here and on Answerbag. Sometimes we joke about and have fun but I'm in on it not a target of it. Maybe you are that and it goes over my head? There are some long-time pals with whom I am always relaxed  and secure because I can depend on them to be logical and thoughtful when that is appropriate and jocular and clever when "a girl just wants to have fun". Of course you are one of them. So let me ask you this. What is it that brings out the "insufferable smarta$$" in you? Just so's I know what to look for! Thank you for your reply Sbf! :)

I answered one of yours a couple days ago with a whole paragraph of rapid-fire puns. You appreciated it - hugs and grins, if I recall.
