I'd say the biggest barrier is an attitude of complacency and denial. A bad education could provide that attitude, but it need not be the source.

I think the biggest barrier to learning is a lack of desire to be knowledgeable. Mediocrity has become the norm in the U.S. Everyone gets a trophy whether they did well or not. What's the incentive to do more if the end result is the same as someone who put in a lot of effort?
Nope not in the least.. sorry if the experiences you have had of education have led you to feel that way :( But for the most part my own education was awesome.. we were taught that learning never stops and personally even at my advanced age I STILL love learning.. it's my greatest pleasure and I get the biggest kick in learning new things and I am so chuffed that I am about to, (OK it might be Jan or next Sept now but) on a level 4 qualification which could entirely change my life's direction.. sooooo bloody cool that we get to do that even when we are older!!!

I do also agree with Harry that experience counts too.. many uni graduates come out with little or no common sense.. but the great thing is you can have both
