How to know when it's appropriate to insert the word "that" into a sentence. The question actually comes up for me quite often.

For example:

The salesman told me I would have to wait three months for the sofa.  

versus

The salesman told me that I would have to wait three months for the sofa.

When I'm in a bad mood, I try to remember it will pass.  

versus

When I'm in a bad mood, I try to remember that it will pass.
