  • "Not long" ... especially without a rooster.

    Not very.

We've lost them to foxes, raccoons, sharp-shinned hawks and other hungry wild critters. The confusion of feral guinea fowl in the neighborhood haven't faired much better as their numbers have dwindled sharply since our one neighbor moved out and abandoned them. We lost our whole flock of free range guineas to an owl, except for one. After all his brethren were gone, he started going in the hen house with the chickens at night. We lost a few chickens to hawks in the day but they were relatively safe at night. Lost some chicks and eggs to rat snakes and one leghorn hen to a rat snake but it didn't eat her, just whatever she was protecting. (At the moment, don't remember if she had chicks or just eggs?) We miss having chickens and guineas.
