    "The Plague Dogs"

     - an animated film but it's for mature audiences; excellent movie to me

Let me guess.  It is angst-ridden?

    Yes.
    :)

    PLOT SPOILER!!
It starts at an animal research center and the dogs escape. Fro various reasons, the public is allowed to think the dogs might carry the plague. And the hunt is on. The movie focuses on their journey.
The two dogs talk to each other -- we, the audience understand their language and know what's going on. These two dogs are incredible characters with depth.
I won't spoil the ending but it's not quite an Old Yeller ending.
    ;)

Though I've never watched Old Yeller for the same reason you stated in your answer.

I'm sure it's great but will I want to jump off a building after I see it?

No, I don't think you'll want to jump off a building. It's a rather ambiguous ending, that might be saying too much even. Yeah, I don't know now.

I just went to youtube to see if youtube had a link to "The Plague Dogs ending" - - I don't speak German but there was a link in German for the end of the movie.

But the youtube comments from people about the movie!!
Maybe you'll want to jump off a building, LyricalOne, if your reaction to the movie is like the people who commented.

It's definitely an emotional movie but it explores courage and hope and adventure and good humans and bad humans --  and, most important to me. "are we humans ever really good in comparison to these two dogs?" It's an amazing film and I found the ending -- I'll say it - - very sad but somehow hopeful adn enlightening.

I do know this for sure - -
my life is better for knowing these two dogs.

The movie is based upon Richard Adams EXCELLENT novel "The Plague Dogs." He also wrote "Watership Down," which was also made in to an animated film.  And though Watership was a bigger hit as a book and movie, I think "The Plague Dogs" is a much better novel than "Watership Down," though I loved "Watership," too.

"The Plague Dogs" movie is unlike any movie I've seen. And, right now, as I type this, I may have decided that it's the best animated film I've seen. I can't say enough great things about the movie (and novel) - - but I can't guarantee about that avoiding high buildings part for you.
    ;)

Seriously, I hope you let me know what you think of the movie if you watch it. I believe I found a link for the entire movie in youtube.

Thanks for listening to me ramble, if you lasted this long into my comment here.

Oh, and I assume you read my short summary of the movie plot I wrote under Shar to the Rona's answer.

I always enjoy reading about your impression of films and the passion you have for them in general.

Really? Oh, good! I'm glad to hear that!
I fear sometimes I go overboard. I do tend to have passionate thoughts about movies at times, especially (and obviously) those movies which have strongly affected me. (Like "The Plague Dogs.")

    Old Yeller.

It allowed me to realize I cannot take any pet, animal, so of COURSE,  dog movie,  where the animal suffers.

  • I don't know that I like any dog movies. Sentimental drivel, most of them. That and baseball movies.

Excellent! That would have been my choice too.  Remarkable that it was based on a true story.

Call of the Wild and White Fang are pretty high up on my list too.  How about you? :)

  • "Call of the Wild" ... I thought was more sad than anything else.  Too sad for me. (Like Haichi) (Good movies though)

"White Fang" ... I 've seen it, but don't remember much about it (so it must not have been that good ... for me)
