None of this namby-pamby rubberized gunk under them, either - it was always concrete or asphalt.

  • Yep. My uncle fell off one of these when he was a kid and broke his leg....Guess what?? Grandma didn't even think about suing anyone over it either.

Wow, what a concept! So much progress in our world yet so much regress in our world.

Remember how hot those slides got in the sun? You could break a leg and get a 2nd degree burn at the same time.

I skinned a knee or two...even my face. Badges of honour.

Knees, faces, elbows - nobody sued, our parents kissed us better, patched us up with iodine and band-aids, and we went straight back to the playground.

  • When I was about 9, I scraped my back badly against the bottom edge. It hurt for days, perhaps weeks, I can't recall. I was given an injection and some capsules, and my mother used to apply some ointment twice a day.

  • In my time, things were a tad better. We had a sandpit at the bottom.

This also had potential for serious injury. Plus everyone could see my underpants (girls always wore dresses in those days).

We couldn't play on the monkey bars unless we had on shorts under our dress.

I loved the big slides; I still do!  I lived across the street from my elementary school so we spent untold hours playing on the school ground slides, swings, monkey bars, parallel bars, straight bars, softball and football fields.  We would bring sheets of wax paper from our kitchens and slide sitting on it which made the slide so so much more slippery.  Great fun!

We used gunnysacks. Better sliding and protection from the heat.

Wow, brings back memories of long sunny days and carefree youth, when life was full of hope and infinite possibility.
