You need to take a test and pass it to drive a car. Why don't we need to take tests and pass them in order to VOTE?

We have a sea of idiots deciding what is what in this country.  It's sickening.  Something's gotta give here.

That would be fine as long as we also give those who cannot a waiver for all taxes. (Federal, state and local)

I believe a private high school diploma should count.

Incorrect.  Voting and sitting on juries are rights that do not hinge on paying taxes.

That is what I would like to see change.  We don't allow voting until a person reaches 18; I would like to see the age raised and add  the minimum education requirement to that.

I understand that is what you want to see changed...I simply said that IF that was changed those who are not allowed to vote should also not be forced to pay taxes....as that would be taxation without representation and we know what that leads to.

Yes.  I agree.  I also think it is a travesty to not let a person vote forever because some felony was committed ages ago.

That makes no sense either.   There are many offenses that are felonious that do not merit that type of punishment.

But anyway, there is no real answer to the voting issue.  Not in any future I can figure out.

There are only nine states which permanently take away the voting rights of felons.  Your state is one of them.

Because those setting the tests will use them to indoctrinate their concept of political correctness.

  • Do I think people should have to pass a basic test before voting?

    YES!!!
    I always felt that way.
There are so many people who just vote for whoever their family or neighbours are voting for.
I've actually heard my mother ask her friends "Who are we voting for?"
I think that just a basic multiple choice test should be manditory to show that you are aware of who the candidates are and what positions they hold on current issues.
You should also be at least able to identify your current President, Vice President, Secretary of state etc.
I first started thinking people should need to qualify to vote after I saw this clip.

You realize the reason there are no tests for voting ... is because there used to be such test requirements.

And who decides what is in those tests?
The same people who draw voting district lines.  The politicians currently in office.
So you should be able to guess what happened.
The politicians made the tests so that only people they wanted to vote, could vote.

A far better solution would be to require a series of Civics classes, starting in middle school ... designed by objective scholars to take into account the entire history of our government.  Both the good and bad.  Including the history of nations we are allies or enemies with, so future generations can better understand the importance of diplomacy before war.

I applaud this response. Agreed. I would love to see this kind of public education - UNBIASED. Imagine that world.
