Can anyone explain what's so fun about sitting at a bar?

But those addicted to alcohol do...

I know, right? It's one of the reasons why I stopped going out to drink at night. I've never really drank alcohol for enjoyment, so the only reason I used to drink was to get drunk. When I was in my late teens/early 20's, I used to drink in nightclubs on the weekends. Entrance fees, rude door staff/security, obnoxious patrons , expensive drinks, loud music - impossible to have a conversation - and it's music I don't even like, long lines for the restrooms - and when you got there they were filthy, then a cab ride home, and a hangover the next day. We're talking over £100, and that was nearly 20 years ago. 

So, who was getting the best deal? It definitely wasn't me. 

I never saw the appeal of bars. My husband is one of those magnetic people that seems to draw every drunken a'hole in the room to him (usually because they want to fight).

No, we drink at home.

If you have no money and no one to buy you a drink?  ZERO.

Bars are for people who enjoy drinking.

My reason for being at a bar is dancing.  I don't drink alcohol but enjoy going and listening to music with friends as well as the dancing.  When I was young and dating we all used to go out and dance all night....it was so much fun and gave me many great funny memories.  

I would not go alone and sit at a bar.  That's just not me.   

I did a lot of bar-hopping as a young sailor in the 70s for numerous reasons listed by others. I stopped when I retired until my first wife kicked me out. I started up again, mainly to hook up. I only drank beer as it was cheap and I didn't get that drunk (usually). I stopped going when I  re-married. She still goes out once in a while, but I almost never do.

Sitting at a bar?  "Like NASCAR, it's a sport that easy to follow while you're hammered."

As I mentioned in my reply to Thriftymaid, dancing is a big appeal of going out to bars for me. However, my partner and I often go this local dive bar (where the drinks are always on special 2-4-1 and we pay maybe $20 each if we're good and wasted) and just sit and chat. It's sometimes hard to hold a conversation when the music is loud, but even then we just sit in silence and enjoy the music and people watch. I have even gone to bars alone before just to be in a new environment, have some drinks to take the edge off, and enjoy the atmosphere. There's something about being out in a new setting that's exciting to me and often makes it more appealing to me than simply staying at home.
