D'ya hafta be a Catholic to become a saint? If not d'ya think that's the likely future for Donald John Trump? Sainted for all his miracles?

  • Why d'ya find it necessary to drag your myopic, and perfidious Leftist, political thoughts and agendas into the Religion and Spirituality section of AnswerMug? Keep this sort of nonsense in the Political section.

This is a religious and spiritual question.  You don't own the site.

We label things as we feel on here.

I do like the perfidious part.  Look to your right-winged (only a winger would take offense to this) mirror Hezekiah

  • You label things the way as you feel here? Quite a statement from somebody who doesn't own this site. If you have been paying attention, which looks like you haven't been, you would know that RosieG makes it her goal in life to bring Donald Trump into the conversation regardless of the subject matter. Her hatred of Trump makes it next to impossible for her to carry on any other way. Of course your hatred for Trump behooves you to agree with her. Right-winged? You assume much. I said nothing about my political affiliation. I simply pointed out an error on RosieG's part. Had she beat Hillary Clinton like a dead horse like she has Trump, I would have said the same thing.

    1.  Anyone who is a Saint and IS Catholic and managed to become one anyway, deserves the title.

    2.  Donald is in Hell.  But he is so insane he has no idea where he is.

  • Donald Trump is in hell? Considering that the meaning of the word hell means the grave, and seeing that Trump isn't dead I would have to say that he isn't there yet. You really should do your research before you say anything. You'd save yourself a lot of embarrassment. They deserve the title of saint? By who's authority? yours? The Pope who is a mere man? The only saving grace about saints is that they are all dead.

The process cannot begin until 5 years AFTER their deaths. So worry not.  Thank you for your reply mom and Happy Thursday. You know what's a bit puzzling though? Your use of the word "grace" in an answer about saints. Where did that come from I wonder? This post was edited by RosieG at October 5, 2017 5:03 AM MDT

I used it as a common idiom but your question did lead me to research the entomology of the word. Given that the original Greek text of the bible was first translated to Latin and then later into English in the 17th century, I would be inclined to go with the Greek or the Latin meanings rather with the English word that was not recorded till the 16th century. Hope you find this as enlightening as I did.

    Grace
fem. proper name, literally "favor, grace;" see grace (n.).grace (v.)
    c. 1200, "to thank," from Old French graciier "thank, give thanks to; praise," from grace "mercy, favor, thanks, virtue" (see grace (n.)). Meaning "to show favor" (mid-15c.) led to that of "to lend or add grace to something" (1580s, as in grace us with your presence), which is the root of the musical sense in grace notes (1650s). Related: Gracedgracing.

grace (n.)late 12c., "God's unmerited favor, love, or help," from Old French grace "pardon, divine grace, mercy; favor, thanks; elegance, virtue" (12c., Modern French grâce), from Latin gratia "favor, esteem, regard; pleasing quality, good will, gratitude" (source of Italian grazia, Spanish gracia; in Church use translating Greek kharisma), from gratus "pleasing, agreeable," from PIE *gwreto-, suffixed form of root *gwere- (2) "to favor."

Sense of "virtue" is early 14c., that of "beauty of form or movement, pleasing quality" is mid-14c. In classical sense, "one of the three sister goddesses (Latin Gratiæ, Greek Kharites), bestowers of beauty and charm," it is first recorded in English 1579 in Spenser. In music, "an embellishment not essential to the melody or harmony," 1650s. As the name of the short prayer that is said before or after a meal (early 13c.; until 16c. usually graces) it has a sense of "gratitude." As a title of honor, c. 1500.

    When used as an idiom,

    Word forms: plural saving graces
    countable noun
saving grace is a good quality or feature in a person or thing that prevents them from being completely bad or worthless.
Ageing's one saving grace is you worry less about what people think.

WOW! Thank you for going to all that effort to research a word and then share your findings. That's the main thing I LOVE about asking questions on Answermug. Learning things I didn't know from folks I'll never meet (probably)! I have always loved the word "grace". I'm gonna share a private experience with you since you so kindly went to all this trouble. My sister and I gave her husband a big party to celebrate his 50th birthday. Co-incidentally it was also the day they both stopped smoking!  The entire family was there..both sides. Toward the end of the day my brother-in-law got his guitar and played "Amazing Grace" and we all sang together. Now we're not a super religious family but that was the song that seemed appropriate and I will never forget it. One of the most memorable times in my life. So the word GRACE is very special to me. Happy Friday mom! :)

So glad you found it interesting, I may well be an atheist but even I can appreciate some of the good things that religion has brought us like art, architecture and even the bible as a work of fiction, Amazing Grace is pretty high up my list. So just for you, this rendition, just try not to think that for two thousand years it has brought little but tears and the crosses to plant on the graves.

Whether or not I believe in a religion, I still find it offensive when others mock it or trivialize it. Most religions and most people, even those without religion, believe that treating others the way you want to be treated (i.e. with kindness and respect) is important.

Protestant meaning of that word just denotes that a person is a church member - in other words a believer who is a member of a church. So we all are saints.
