I'm a hippie at heart. I believe in their message. At the time, the world was on fire, and many hippies stood up for what they believed in- peace( make love not war), and exercised their right to protest and were able to get things changed. ( I know there were hippies that created their own counter cultures, did drugs- tuned out)
I don't know. I would not characterize it as "activist". We did not want to strive or compete but just enjoy our lives as best we could. Groove on whatever came our way. What did we know about love or peace?
If you read the hippie graghic I posted, it defines a hippie " to be part of a peaceful activism, striving for word peace." I understand, that this isn't what every hippie's goal was, that's why at the beginning of my answer, I wrote "many", teenagers were breaking away from their parents and the rules of the 1950s- "don't trust anyone over 30" teenage boys were being drafted and sent to war in Vietnam, young adults were trying to find their way.

I agree. Both of my sisters are idiots, especially the one in FL. She feeds many of them and is known as the cat lady of Carabelle. My wife got bit by one and spent 8 days in the hospital. She almost lost her arm.
Carabelle!? My favorite campsite is in Tate's Hell State Forest. I've always wanted to try fishing offshore from there. Do you know anything about that?
Oh yes. Ran away from home, lived with a band in San Francisco, indulged proudly in drugs and sex in the mid 1970s. The last "class" of the original hippies. At the time those were the only things I had to feel good about but in time I was able to build upon them and develop skills with which to cope with real life.
