Is there a song you didn't particularly like until a certain artist/s performed her/his/their version of it?

One for me ~

"God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen"

by "The Barenaked Ladies" along with Sarah McLaughlin

 - - their version makes me smile and smile and smile

  • Here's another one.  Popular song, well liked by most people and then The Animals took the dirge out of it ... :)

The Animals - "See See Rider"

    And the original .....

    Chuck Willis - "C. C. Rider"

I like the Animals' version better.
    :)

In the original, I really like the back-up singers better than Willis!

Sorry it took this long to respond! Somehow I missed seeing your answer.

I'm only now realizing that I need to look up more of The Animals and Eric Burdon - - he's got a great voice and I like their sound as a group.

I can't think of one. I always prefer the originals.

Take this one for example; "Reason to Believe" by Rod Stewart. I'm not saying I dislike it - it's a solid cover - better sang and better musically than the original.

But for me, it lacks that rawness of the original. Tim Hardin knew what it needed to sound like when he was writing it. Without all of the extra stuff Rod Stewart added to it, the lyrics are more powerful. I have to link because it won't embed.

I hope you don't mind that, after listening to the original, I didn't even listen to Rod Stewart. I can't stand Rod Stewart's voice. There's hardly any song of his that I like -- because he sings them, ha!

    Loved Hardin's song and performance!

(Funny - - in my example -- God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is a Christmas carol; no one artist is strongly associated with it; I never really paid much attention to it but I love the song in "The Barenaked Ladies with Sarah McLaughlin's" version.)

    :)

Well, you definitely listed to the better of the two. lol :)

I'm not much of a fan of Xmas music, tbh, but I can understand why you prefer that version of it. The guy's voice reminds me of Michael Bublee. Hahaha!

I don't know Bublee's voice well enough yet to hear a likeness.

Looks like I gave the same answer months ago.  I must be telling the truth for a change.
