Do you equate Morality with Religion? Does it require a belief in a supernatural being to be aware of RIGHT and WRONG? Why?

Morality existed before religion. As I've observed before, most of the Commandments (apart from the specifically religious ones) are a simple takeover of pre-existing morals.

I think so too Malizz. All this gibberish about religion being the prime directive/basis/catalyst for morality is bulloney! In my opinion of course and apparently yours as well! Thank you for your reply m'dear and Happy Sunday! :)

  • You are partially correct. Morality existed before religion but not in the heart and mind of man. It existed in the perfect wisdom of God. Man is not moral and ethical within himself. Mankind traded perfection for deceit and rebellion. Mankind has never been capable of of moral behavior without the enlightened authority of God. As far as commandments, I know of no others except the ones handed down to Moses on Sinai. Those have been sufficiently encompassing. Secular law and authority has been based on these, yet mankind has chosen to remain in defiance of what we were warned against by God.

  • No, religion can disappoint and not not lay the cornerstone and foundation for a healthy spiritual life. Religion is organization and administration within some group. Just because it happens to be ecumenical in nature, it doesn't follow that we develop spiritual maturity according to God's ordinances. We walk in faith and we trust in the unseen. With meditation in God's word we grow to an understanding of what God has for our lives. Salvation, blessing and mercy are gifts through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ which we do not merit nor earn. Man is imperfect and comes fully equipped with a natural proclivity for sin. Man cannot save himself by dwelling on what he should do, only what he can do through the transforming grace of God.

    No, I do not.
Morality is the product of man’s coexistence within a group, not the renderings of some invisible deity. Our principles of right and wrong far predate any of the known Faiths and were born of human experience, not revelation.
How much immorality can we cite that was committed in the name of religion? Religion has nothing really to do with morality, it’s about power fueled by superstition.
